Worked my tail off today, made every thing I could do ahead of time! Don't feel very good. Strange pains, muscles Charlie horsing on me. Offering it up for Ches, Martin, Orate, Munda, Servus, Dymph, Jacob, Miki, and a host of others. Hopefully this strangeness will just disappear, like so many other things do.  :) But...all in all, it was a good day.

Open, now. Come on in and distract me. Really, I am still marveling over my beautiful daughter and her brand new, beautiful baby.

I'm here to bring the distraction...and, a margarita, compliments of husband.

Ummmm, my only education philosophy is truth in God and the school of life. Not trying to be cute.  It's all I know, and from that is the source of my education. Besides hundreds of books read, and a few Catechism classes. Now, I'll take that margarita, Munda.

Hope you enjoyed the margarita, Carleen!

So, based on the very little research I've done, it sounds like your ideas fit closely with Charlotte Mason's.  From what I understand, she strongly believed that education and religion were closely intertwined, and that truth and knowledge - whether it be math or theology, grammar or philosophy - all come directly from God.  So, for example, the orderliness of math reveals the orderliness of God, thus studying math concepts will ultimately lead you closer to knowing who God is and how He operates.  She, too, believed children learn best from real interactions with the world around them vs. simulated practice.  And, of course, she stresses the importance of reading LOTS of good literature.  I am finding very drawn to her ideas and methods.  And, while Seton has served our family very well over the years, and I still think their curriculum is very well done, I am wondering if God might not be leading us to a shift in how we educate our own children.  Lately, school feels overly rushed, busy, and very 'check the box and get it done'.  I feel a strong need to slow down a little bit, and focus more on better absorption of what we are studying.....more of a quality vs. quantity.  Husband and I need to do some praying and discussing about things, for sure.  Either way, I've not doubt God will make sure to lead us on the path that is right for our family - whether we continue with what we are doing, or transition into something different.  Just some ponderings I've been doing while rocking and nursing a sick baby.....

Not quite sure why, but we haven't opened our gifts yet.  They are all piled up, sitting on the couch.  Looking at me.

Hubby actually liked the gift I got him (and it wasn't cold cash  :swoon1: ) :

His Mom once told me about  how their house used to have a long front porch on it, but they had to drastically shorten it because he used to ride his Big Wheel off it for fun.  A couple of trips to the doctor for stitches and his Dad put a stop to that.  He put cement steps in that were just the width of the door.  We couldn't be more opposite if we tried!

It's minus thirty degrees Celsius here tonight. It's pretty cold, even in the house.

Today I was the very last juror excused from the trial.  I was a little disappointed! I'm still not supposed to say anything about it until a verdict is reached. I think I have to call in to find out, probably in a week or so. It's not a big case and wasn't in the news yet; it would probably be a fairly small news item. At this point we (jurors) have a better feel for the judge and lawyers then for the defendant or case.  By the end, I was rather drawn into becoming more involved, but oh well, it was not to be!

Well, the case was nearly a month ago and I finally called in to find out the verdict - which was "guilty" on both counts.  It was a domestic violence case; a man attacked his spouse or girl friend, while a child was watching.  That's about all we were told.

The judge (a woman) was very likable and humorous and explained things very well; and she was very good at probing to get jurors to open up.   She wanted us to tell her ANYTHING that might be a factor in how we would do in the actual trial.

Many of the jurors were excused because they had personal experience with such violence, or with the police in general, etc.  The judge only dismissed them when they actually admitted that they might have trouble being fair because of their experience (or didn't want to serve); but later the attorneys dismissed more, for whatever reasons. One woman came right out and explicitly said she was a feminist, and couldn't be fair, and wanted to be excused.

The judge said that we had to do "mental gymnastics" when serving on the trial.  I spoke up because this sounded to me like twiddling with my conscience.  But later I understood that she meant that we shouldn't look at the defendant in quite the same way as we would outside a trial.  I admit that, even if I try to be fair, I might have little preconceived notions about a defendant "well after all he has been CHARGED, how could he be innocent [and, without wanting to admit it, he looks like 'that kind of guy']". The judge reminded us how seriously "innocent until proven guilty" must be taken; and how a defendant doesn't even have to take the stand but still can't be presumed guilty (the prosecution has the burden of proof).

The judge said that we shouldn't even say hello to her or the attorneys or anyone in the court on the outside, to avoid possible influence on each other.  Well, I sat down on the jury bench outside early on the 2nd day, and a man came and sat next to me, and I thought he was another juror, so I said hello, and he said hi back.  Turned out he was the defendant (the courtroom opened and someone escorted him in  (Oops!)).  No big deal, but I thought it was something the judge might want to know about.  She did, but just asked if I thought it would influence me.  I admitted that it made "innocent until proven guilty" a little more meaningful.  Didn't bother the judge; but it was the prosecuting attorney who finally dismissed me (very last juror excused)!

(Lest you think I wasn't very observant, my juror seat was at the opposite end of the table from where the defendant sat, so he was obscured by both of the attorneys.  Of course it is also true that I am not very observant.)

[Matthew 8:26]  And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.

[Job  38:1-5]  Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said: [2] Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words? [3] Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. [4] Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding. [5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Jesus, Mary, I love Thee! Save souls!

Wow Non!  That sounds like it was quite the ordeal.  Did the man have your spidey senses tingling?  More and more men are going to prison because of domestic violence.  It has always been around but for some reason it just kind of seems more prevalent now.  Maybe it's just me.  Both Hubby's Protege's Father and Uncle are in prison because of it.  Sadly, the family uses that as an excuse for Protege's behavior.  I don't know what the answer is to stop the attitude from going generation to generation, but just throwing your hands up and saying, "He's bad, just like his Father!" can't possibly be it.

Did you recognize the story once you were able to hear about it, Non?  You must have had a look of someone that would not take any nonsense.  Otherwise I'm sure you would have been chosen for the jury.  Better luck next time!
