I thought Peking Man was an evolutionist hoax?

I think you have that confused with pilton man

I heard Peking Man was a full monkey, and lunch
The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
    It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
    It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
    And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
    And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
    There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
    Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
    World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

That may be what they thought, but now they are learning otherwise.

You're thinking of De Chardin's Piltdown man.

Ps 135

For he was mindful of us in our affliction: * for his mercy endureth for ever.
And he redeemed us from our enemies: * for his mercy endureth for ever.
Who giveth food to all flesh: * for his mercy endureth for ever.
Give glory to the God of heaven: * for his mercy endureth for ever.
Give glory to the Lord of lords: * for his mercy endureth for ever.

Perhaps you're thinking of Mao Tse Tung, a communist hoax.

Yes, Piltdown man was a hoax, but Peking Man is very iffy itself, considering (I've heard) it no longer exists, and they only have plaster casts.
