Is that really true?  I remember sitting at a table with an organist once, during the coffee-time after Mass, and he was upset that an English-language hymn was used during the Mass.  His theory was that you shouldn't have any vernacular hymns from the sign of the cross to the Ite missa est.  He said, "everything has to be in Latin!"  To which some wise-aleck (it wasn't me) replied, "even the sermon?"  He did not appreciate that.  But maybe he was right, and you're not supposed to have vernacular songs during the Mass.

I don't know if it's actually forbidden, but it's not given as an option (and if your musicians won't do it, you can't force them  :lol:). My husband hates Sufjan almost as much as you do, so I guess it worked out for the best.
