Quote from: Stu Cool on September 26, 2024, 06:09:39 PMMy girls have gotten into chess recently (11, 9, 7, and even the 5 year old).  They play each other.  I'll play them. And then let them play on a computer playing against AI.  They really enjoy it.

Do you ruthlessly destroy their pieces or give them a chance?

I destroy them.  That way they can learn.

Same here.  They learn best that way.
The royal feast was done; the King
Sought some new sport to banish care,
And to his jester cried: "Sir Fool,
Kneel now, and make for us a prayer!"

The jester doffed his cap and bells,
And stood the mocking court before;
They could not see the bitter smile
Behind the painted grin he wore.

He bowed his head, and bent his knee
Upon the Monarch's silken stool;
His pleading voice arose: "O Lord,
Be merciful to me, a fool!"

I am in the break room at the High School I work at during the time that there is for Chess; I always let the beginners win, as it gives them a good time and encourages them to keep playing; also by prolonging the game they learn how to move the pieces better and to get a feel for the game.
"The World Must Conform to Our Lord and not He to it." Rev. Dennis Fahey CSSP

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." Cardinal Pie of Potiers

I've also let them play against the computer with varying difficulties.  It's also useful because it shows where all the pieces can go when you select it.

I have found it useful, as a middle aged novice. To have some assistance, with a computer to get to grip with movements of the pieces. And also occasionally playing stronger players, so as to give me a bit of a technical push forward, in chess development.

Along with going back to basics with chess, I have decided to go back to basics with Backgammon. Thought it may help to keep me occupied, and awake, when I am working night shifts.  ::)

I will definitely take up your offer. In a few weeks time I will be good to go. Many thanks for the opportunity to play a game.
