Well, long story short I'm back with the Kindle Paperwhite. I'd tried it a couple of years ago and got hand cramps from trying to hold it vertically. So I returned it. Then I tried a Scribe, which I liked a lot, but I was scared to use it because it was so expensive and I was scared of it getting damaged. Sold it. Then I decided to try a Nook, since I sideload my books anyway and was tempted by the 7.8" screen and page turn buttons. What a fiasco. I couldn't use Calibre to move my books onto the Nook, so I had to drag and drop them one by one. Then I kept getting an error message when I tried to navigate in the menus, and the Nook kept crashing. So I returned it. And found the Paperwhite Kids on sale right now, with an additional 20% off from trading in an old Fire tablet. I'd learned in the meantime that it was possible to read in horizontal orientation on the Paperwhite, so I took the plunge and tried it. Y'all. I am in LOVE. It's so comfortable to hold. I hold it in my left hand, by the bottom bezel. And it tricks my brain into thinking that there are more words to the page. I got the Forest green case, and it's great: very sturdy, and pleasant to hold. I have it on airplane mode right now, until they get the updates straightened out, and that's great, too. No ads. Just the pretty screensavers. :)

My Kindle paperwhite is permanently in airplane mode. Most of the books I read are side-loaded so I do not need it to be online. Occasionally, when I buy a book I will set to to online, download the book, then set it back to airplane mode.

Works for me.

Pros:
- battery lasts much longer
- no annoying updates/adverts etc.
Cons:
- If you had another device and wanted to keep them in sync it would not work
(but I do not used that functionality anyway)
Father time has an undefeated record.

But when he's dumb and no more here,
Nineteen hundred years or near,
Clau-Clau-Claudius shall speak clear.

The only feature I want to be able to use is Collections. But I don't want it enough to take the kindle out of airplane mode.
My Lord and my God.
