What did you do for Christmas?

What did you all do for Christmas? Did you have any fun plans? Did you (or your family) do any fun Christmas traditions?

For me, my immediate family is out of town to visit my brother. So, I spent Christmas Eve as usual with the extended family and went by my Grandmother's house on Christmas Day.

For Christmas Eve, since a large number of us are Polish, we have done the oplatki "thing."  However, we have not done this since my Grandfather died.  :(
Wiki - Christmas Wafer

Other than that, we sit around, drink, eat, and be merry. Like good Catholics!

Oh, we also put a pickle in the tree.  I think that's a Polish custom!

Over the course of three days - Christmas Eve, Christmas, and the day after Christmas - managed to consume excessive amounts of food in three different houses.

ONCE AGAIN, managed to NOT go to Midnight Mass and wound up at the Mass During The Daytime.  If anything, meaning to go to Midnight Mass and missing out at the last minute is becoming a tradition all its own now...

I forgot that the local NO parishes put most of their services on Christmas Eve, so when I awoke at my normal time on Christmas(10am), I had already missed all of the Masses in the area.  :-\

I went to dinner at my parents' house, tried to go see a movie that was sold out, and had a few beers at my house with 3 out of town friends. I'm hoping to have some traditions ready to implement next year, but this year has just been too crazy for that.

Not to be debbie downer here, but...

It wasn't the best Christmas for me. I didn't go to mass, since I have to travel to get to a TLM, and I won't attend the NO. I couldn't get away, dangerous driving weather, obligations, etc. I've been scrupling about it, and have been trying to figure out what to do for the upcoming holy day. I travel on sundays to get to mass, but it's next to impossible for me on weekdays.

I also spent much of Christmas being the peace maker between family members. So discouraging.

My moms side of the family had a huge quarrel on Christmas day. It was terrible.

I kept thinking to myself the whole time, that if my family could be faithful Catholics, a lot of the problems they see as HUGE would seem small in light the consolations given by Christ and his holy Mother.

One thing that was enjoyable was my dad and i's tradition of watching the same movie together every year. :)

Aww, I'm sorry, Eliza. :( There's still time for you to have a nice Christmas season, though. :) I hope the rest of it is better!

Thankyou, Lyubov.

While it has been a little miserable, I see good in it. It really drove home to me the need for Christ, and just how far Christ has been removed from Christmas in our pagan culture. I think it was good for me not to experience Christmas as I always have (fun presents, time with family, lots of food, etc). Once all of that was removed, or made unenjoyable, it set me up nicely to really contemplate Our Lord's Nativity, to draw close to him, and offer up my sadness. It was certainly the most reflective Christmas I've ever had!

That's a good way to look at it! :) It sounds like you did get some nice presents, though!

On purpose this year I really did not do anything for Christmas except go to mass. I got up early and caught the Popes Christmas message on TV and went to a beautiful mass at 11:00 then on the way home stopped and visited mom and dads grave site, came home watched  the song of Bernadette on tv and ate a great dinner.....perfect day     It was the first Christmas Latin Mass I've gone to in the two years I've been a Trad. ( I went NO last year) so it was real special for me.

Sorry to hear that, Eliza. But as Lyubov said, you can still have a good Christmas season.  :)

I remember when I used to consume excessive amounts of food in three different houses on just Christmas Day.  ;D Well, I never ate much at my house, it was mostly the other two houses I went to.

This year for Christmas I just spent time with my family as I did last year.

By the way, Kaesekopf, sorry to hear that about your grandfather. May his soul rest in peace.

Thanks, SS.  He passed in September 2011 after a lengthy battle with throat cancer.  Praise God he had received last rites on the Sunday prior (he died the following Tuesday morning) with his family, and son (who is a priest) at his side.  :)

We did the Posada processions around the block.

Since I am in Mexico all the neighbors are Catholics, and they all do the procession.

Had dinner at the in-laws. I'm the teetotaler in the family, (immediate & extended). So to lighten up the mood, we sang and lit up firecrackers. Good times.

New years will be God-willing, at my parents house, a bit more formal, Bach, Beethoven, hopefully I will get to see the majority of my siblings there. 15 of em and 32 nieces and nephews.

How do you have 15 siblings?

That is an impressive feat for your parents!

It is. And still my dad get upset when he is approached and told "Didn't you have TV back in the 60's?"
