Thank you Penelope for the fine job you did; I am sorry to see you go.
I will pray that Kaese finds some more help here as this place keeps growing, it will need supervision.
...
I remember some time ago, that I suggested to you, Michael, that you would be an excellent moderator (which I still think). You said that you did not have enough time.
...

I was thinking the same thing before I saw your post.  But maybe he would be too easy going.  :)
[Matthew 8:26]  And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.

[Job  38:1-5]  Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said: [2] Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words? [3] Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. [4] Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding. [5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Jesus, Mary, I love Thee! Save souls!

But he's so level-headed. :)

Michael Wilson. He'll get the coffee going in the morning. He has skills. And a pleasant even temper to boot.
To board the struggle bus: no whining, board with a smile, a fake one will be found out and put off at next stop, no maps, no directions, going only one way, one destination. Follow all rules and you will arrive. Drop off at pearly gate. Bring nothing.

I'm good at making coffee; keeping people in line, not so much.

"My brothers, all of you, if you are condemned to see the triumph of evil, never applaud it. Never say to evil: you are good; to decadence: you are progess; to death: you are life. Sanctify yourselves in the times wherein God has placed you; bewail the evils and the disorders which God tolerates; oppose them with the energy of your works and your efforts, your life uncontaminated by error, free from being led astray, in such a way that having lived here below, united with the Spirit of the Lord, you will be admitted to be made but one with Him forever and ever: But he who is joined to the Lord is one in spirit." You really don't know how your good humor and disposition can neutralize a dicey conversation. You can't change my mind Michael Wilson. Besides if your nice temperament doesn't do it your good coffee will ;)

My own choice for moderator would be Gardener, but he is under a self imposed ban. He has the brains, the niceness and the toughness. Greg would be another one.

I see. You make coffee though. They do not have your skills. Yes Gardener is all you say. He is a gentleman. Greg is a wee bit of an instigater, but good color for the forum. No, as far as I can see, you'd be my pic, besides as you stated, Gardener is on self imposed ban, unless, Kaese.....can woo him back? Maybe.

It goes without saying that you would have to spend a great deal of time READING constantly, and comprehend well enough what you read so that when it is time to moderate, it is done fairly.

That's not exactly how it works. This forum is a hobby for the mods just as it is for ordinary posters, so we'd often end up primarily just reading the threads that interest us (and moderating anything we saw as it came up) and relying on the aid of others to call our attention to issues we had not yet seen. It's also the case that most of us would only have time to devote to moderating the forum in the evenings, after work or after the kids went to bed. When there were many mods, we tended to have slightly different areas of interest, so between the four or five of us, most threads were seen by at least one mod's eyes. That hasn't been the case for a while, so PMs and "report to moderator" have been the best tools people could use to direct our attention to potential trouble or even to easy fixes like messed up BBCode. We also kept an eye out for troll-like behavior and spam accounts. Those issues are usually pretty obvious and could be handled with relative quickness once we became aware of them.

I am talking about what is objectively proper moderating.

Coming from you, Michael Wilson, high praise indeed.

Certainly. I couldn't have known how you mishandled it until you let on to us here.

People need to look at how the Church had strict rules about what was published, and the great care that went into it to make sure error was not spread. A web forum is not a gathering of people in a parlor who speak there minds and it doesn't go further than the walls. Today, a web forum is like a stage where everyone has a turn to go to the microphone, and its heard across the country. It's worse than a newspaper, where a paper at least is read once and then discarded. Here it is permanent, and digitally indexed for the whole world upon keyword search in Google. A heavy responsibility. Now you can see why I wrote what I did.

For example, lay opinions about a vacant Papal seat.   ;)

Good thing that is not an error.    ;)
