I'm selling a complete set of the 1914 Catholic Encyclopedia. Fifteen Volumes and Index. Special Edition Under the Auspices of the Knights of Columbus Catholic Truth Committee.

When purchased direct, the price is $900.

I bought this set in the early 1990s from Thomas Loome. At the time, Dr. Loome remarked it was one of the best preserved sets he had seen. I saw the many sets he had over the course of a year - this is one of the best examples.

That was 30 years ago. This set is in the same great condition today.

The hard cover board is in overall good condition. Several volumes show slight warpage around the edges opposite the binding. Some wear on the edges of the cover is apparent. Remnants of the call number labels are apparent on the spines.

The bindings (sewn signatures) are in excellent condition and are firmly attached to the covers. They are able to withstand regular use.

Ex Libris bookplates are attached to the front covers. The first page of each volume is stamped "Blue Cloud Abbey Marvin, S. Dak. 57251." Some volumes are stamped "Private Library John Bettendorf St. Cloud, Minn." or "Rev. John Bettendorf." Library card pockets are attached to the back covers.

The pages show moderate yellowing but are in otherwise excellent condition - they are not dog-eared, marked up, torn, or deformed. The paper material is sturdy and able to withstand regular use.

Included are interesting artifacts found among the volumes of this set: a travel brochure from 1942, a bookmark made from a 1920s-era bank register, an interesting prayer intention leaflet for the month of December, 1916, and a Christmas card with Mass schedule sent from the Rev. John Bettendorf in 1961.

This complete set is a valuable addition to any collection of reference books. The fifteen volumes and index provide comprehensive coverage of the Catholic Faith and its history. The illustrations, photographs, diagrams, tables, charts and maps are worth the price alone.

The quality, age, and provenance make this set a rare find for collectors. Whether you are a scholar or simply interested in the history of the Catholic Faith, this set is a must-have for your library.
