Animal souls are a tough one.  There is simply no way to know.  IF the animal soul perceives qualia, there's no way to discover it, as the perception of qualia is immaterial.  An animal can't show you perception of pain anymore than you can show me your perception of "red" qua "red".

I'll revert back to agreeing with whatever Catholic philosophers and theologians state.  And perhaps it can be traced to revealed Truth.
