The History Subforum / Maria de Agreda
Last post by benedicite - Today at 03:21:05 AM
This is from the Notre Dame Archives. They chronicle the fruit of the coming of Venerable Maria de Agreda for the conversion of the Jumanos to the Catholic Faith.

Expedition of twelve soldiers, nineteen priests and twelve lay brothers, Franciscans, from the City of Mexico set out on Sep. 4, 1628. With them was Fr. Estevan de Perea. At the Rio del Norte where the territory of New Mexico begins they took possession on April 7, 1629. At one day's march from Robledo, Fr. Martinez Gonzales died. Arrived at Santa Fe. As it was Pentecost the priests held their chapter after which priests and brothers went to the towns and colonies assigned to them, and to the large town of Humanas and to other towns called Pyros and Tonpiros. His Majesty's alms were distributed among the missions and catechetical stations. In charge of conversions were Fr. Antonio de Artiaga, Fray Francisco, Councelor, Fray Diego de la Fuente, Fray Francisco de Azebedo, priests and Garcia de San Francisco and Diego de San Lucas lay brothers. The Indians eagerly asked Baptism. An escort of twenty soldiers under Don Francisco de Sylva accompanied Fr. Bartholomew Romero and Fr. Francisco Munoz on the first expedition to the Apaches of Quinia and Manases. These Indians showed a great desire for Baptism. On June 23 Fray Roque de Figueredo, Fray Francisco de Porras, Fray Andres Gutierrez, and Fray Augustin de Cuellar, priests and Fray Francisco de San Buenaventura and Fray Cristoval de la Concepcion, also Estevan de Perea and Fr. Thomas Manso, set out for Penal de Acoma and the provinces of Zuni and Moqui. Fr. Juan Ramirez remained at Acoma. Going east they arrived at Zuni. The inhabitants were very exact in superstitious practices. Their villages have streets and continuous houses. These people are clothed. Corn, beans, and pumpkins are produced. The Indians were taught the veneration due to priests. A house was purchased for the priests and this later became the first church of the province. The country was taken possession of in the name of the Roman See and the king of Spain. Fr. Roque de Figueredo was left in charge together with Fr. Augustin de Cuellar, priest and Fray Francisco de la Madre de Dios, a lay brother and three soldiers. The Indians were attentive to Fr. Roque and helped supply the mission with its wants. This narrative will be continued in another account.

Quote from: Bernadette on March 28, 2024, 06:10:15 AMThis looks like it might be happening in May. It depends on my uncle. We might actually be driving out, which I would prefer infinitely to flying.  :pray3:

Nice! I too immensely prefer driving experience over flying one. Hopefully it works out!

The Bookstore / Re: RULE/MARTYROLOGY THREAD
Last post by OmniaInstaurareInChristo - March 28, 2024, 08:34:08 PM
The reading appointed from the Rule of St. Benedict for March 29:

CHAPTER XLVIII
Of the daily manual labour (cont.)

From the first of October to the beginning of Lent let them apply to reading until the end of the second hour. Let Tierce be then said, and until the ninth hour let all labour at the work that is enjoined them. When the first signal for None is given, let every one break off from his work, and be ready as soon as the second signal is sounded. After their meal, let them occupy themselves in their reading, or in learning the Psalms. During Lent, let them apply themselves to reading from morning until the end of the third hour, and then, until the end of the tenth, labour at whatever is enjoined them. And in these days of Lent let each one receive a book from the library, and read it all through in order. These books are to be given out at the beginning of Lent. Above all, let one or two seniors be appointed to go round the Monastery, at the hours when the brethren are engaged in reading, and see that there be no slothful brother giving himself to idleness or to foolish talk, and not applying himself to his reading, so that he is thus not only useless to himself, but a distraction to others. If such a one be found (which God forbid) let him be corrected once and a second time; and if he do not amend, let him be subjected to the chastisement of the Rule, so that the rest may be afraid. And let not one brother associate with another at unseasonable hours.

Martyrology-March 30th
Roman Martyrology-March 30th-on this date in various years-

At Rome, on the Appian Way, the martyrdom of the tribune blessed Quirinus, who had been baptized with all his household by Pope St. Alexander when he was imprisoned in their house. Under Emperor Adrian, he was delivered to the judge Aurelian, and because he persevered in the confession of faith, his tongue was torn out, he was stretched on the rack, his hands and feet were cut off, and the sword completed his course of martyrdom.

At Thessalonica, the birthday of the holy martyrs Domninus, Victor, and their companions.

At Constantinople, in the time of Constantius, the commemoration of many holy martyrs of the Catholic communion, whom the heresiarch Macedonius put to death by unheard-of kinds of torments. Among other tortures, they were burned with red-hot irons, and the breasts of Christian women were cut away between the lids of coffers.

At Senlis in France, the death of St. Regulus, bishop of Arles.

At Orleans in France, Bishop St. Pastor.

At Syracuse, St. Zosimus, bishop and confessor.

On Mount Sinai, Abbot St. John Climacus.

At Aquileria in Spain, the confessor St. Peter Regalado, priest of the Order of Friars Minor. He was born in Valladolid, and restored the regular discipline in the Spanish monasteries. Pope Benedict XIV placed him on the roll of saints.

At Aquino, St. Clinius confessor.

And elsewhere in divers places, many other holy martyrs, confessors, and holy virgins.
R. Thanks be to God.

Quote from: Greg on March 13, 2024, 03:20:31 PMI warned.  I was 100% right

Wow. Not a bit of reply to what I argued but a little victory dance instead. I see the Prots and Atheists I deal with do that quite a bit when they have nothing else.

Let's look at that "victory."  You took a 50/50 gamble on whether a sinner would relapse. Amazing.

Is that 100% right despite all of your prayers that you would be wrong? How much were you praying for him to grow in righteousness and sanctity or were you secretly hoping for a fall?

If the latter, that kind of haughty pride in another's fall, that schadenfruede is going to put your tail right in Hell, no question about it.

I'll say a rosary tomorrow (Good Friday) for you and Voris together, so you both don't wind up in Hell.

Quote from: Bonaventure on March 19, 2024, 12:02:45 PMI am disgusted that you'd compare this Faggot to Gibson.

Disgusted or not, the comparison was apt.  Your stupid reaction isn't.

QuoteGibson did not create a supposedly Catholic "apostolate" wherein he set himself up as an arbiter of Catholic morality. Getting in the faces of bishops and clergy. Muckraking and calumniating the SSPX.

And?  I never said Voris did everything right, nor did I state that Voris didn't do a lot of things wrong.

Where's your list of the things Voris didn't do that Gibson did pre and post "Passion" that are not actions that Gibson is particularly proud of nowadays?

Oh, that's right, you just quoted me pointing out the glaringly obvious that you suddenly are blind to.

I'm pretty disgusted by the intellectual dishonesty and the pimping and distortion of Catholicism by so called Catholics and their selective outrage and double standards.

I have it in Spanish on kindle. It's so hard to read because of the tangents, that I usually give up and switch to English.

The High Priestly prayer of Jesus at the Last Supper

[1] These things Jesus spoke, and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said: Father, the hour is come, glorify thy Son, that thy Son may glorify thee. [2] As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he may give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. [3] Now this is eternal life: That they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. [4] I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. [5] And now glorify thou me, O Father, with thyself, with the glory which I had, before the world was, with thee.

[6] I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou hast given me out of the world. Thine they were, and to me thou gavest them; and they have kept thy word. [7] Now they have known, that all things which thou hast given me, are from thee: [8] Because the words which thou gavest me, I have given to them; and they have received them, and have known in very deed that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. [9] I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them whom thou hast given me: because they are thine: [10] And all my things are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

[11] And now I am not in the world, and these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name whom thou has given me; that they may be one, as we also are. [12] While I was with them, I kept them in thy name. Those whom thou gavest me have I kept; and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition, that the scripture may be fulfilled. [13] And now I come to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy filled in themselves. [14] I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world; as I also am not of the world. [15] I pray not that thou shouldst take them out of the world, but that thou shouldst keep them from evil.

[16] They are not of the world, as I also am not of the world. [17] Sanctify them in truth. Thy word is truth. [18] As thou hast sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. [19] And for them do I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. [20] And not for them only do I pray, but for them also who through their word shall believe in me;

[21] That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. [22] And the glory which thou hast given me, I have given to them; that they may be one, as we also are one: [23] I in them, and thou in me; that they may be made perfect in one: and the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast also loved me. [24] Father, I will that where I am, they also whom thou hast given me may be with me; that they may see my glory which thou hast given me, because thou hast loved me before the creation of the world. [25] Just Father, the world hath not known thee; but I have known thee: and these have known that thou hast sent me.

[26] And I have made known thy name to them, and will make it known; that the love wherewith thou hast loved me, may be in them, and I in them.
