Marble Tombstones in St. John's Co-Cathedral, Malta.

The cathedral floor is composed of nearly 400 tombs of Knights and officers of the Knights of Malta. Each tombstone is inlaid by a marble slab bearing the crest, coat-of-arms and epitaph of the knight.

Tables which were never mandated by Vatican II, I'd like to add. I'm not aware of anything in any Council document which mandates the use of a free-standing altar.

And yet many (most?) bishops used VII as the excuse to wreckovate the parishes in their dioceses whenever possible.

Fine, fine images.

Just the place I mostly go these days, St Kevin's church Dublin, diocesan. Fr Deighan, the Parish Priest (for some reason Abp Martin calls the PP the Administrator) is delivering a homily. The hope is to restore the stenciled painting seen in the restored sanctuary throughout the church. The photo was taken by John Briody (https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnbriody/33548356703/in/photostream/) somewhere before the outer altar rails.

edit, second photo by same photographer of the same from another angle.

The church is in danger of being closed and torn down in favor of a church that looks like a carpeted meeting hall.

My former parish.  I used to work there, too, in [slightly] saner times.   There is a campaign to save the church, but I get the impression that the current pastor wants it closed and the bishop is washing his hands and claiming the responsibility is not his.   I wrote him a letter telling him that it is.

The little Church of Our Lady of the Cape, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Queen of Canada.
Trois-Rivières, Quebec

The statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary was crowned under the authority of Pope Pius X in 1904 and again under the authority of Pope Pius XII: it is the only crowned Madonna in Canada. Pope John Paul II made his personal pilgrimage on 10 September 1984. In 1988, the centenary of the apparition, Father Frédéric, one of the first visionaries, was beatified. Many cures and accounts of spiritual blessings have been attested in the name of the Virgin who opened her eyes.

Maybe slow down a little?  I don't have all day to look at all these.  :)

I look at so many too quickly... It's like a whirlwind tour of Europe (or the Cathedrals and churches there).   You can't say no to the offer, but there's something to be said for taking more time to absorb each one (Daily Pictures).  How wonderful  it would be to visit even a few of these places in real life, with the time to look around and to meditate.

It will be nice if this thread can be kept up in the future, even if this means some images are kept for later, to be distributed more slowly over time.

On the other hand,  it's good to have many images available in one place, and looking at them too quickly is my fault not the fault of the quantity of riches they provide.  This isn't a thread you HAVE to "keep up with", and it can be "bumped" with a few more pictures as time goes on.

Thank you Vetus Ordo and Lumen Christi (and others) for this treasure.

I love this thread. I am so awfully grateful for imagery that helps my meditations. These images do just that. Not all move me the same, but that is natural. I wish I could capture Our Lady and Our Lord in a manner that truly moves the soul, but I do not have the skill or inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  :(

Beautiful.  Back in the 1970's (or was it the 1980's?) my family would occasionally drive an hour or so to San Juan Capistrano for one of the very rare Tridentine Masses (TLMs) that were available at that time.  TLMs were even rarer (and traditionalists were even more frowned on) back then then they are now.  (I don't think these were indult Masses, but I'm not sure).  Usually we went to a Ukrainian Catholic church.

Toma de Sevilla por Fernando III en 1248 (The Reconquest of Seville).

On 23 November 1248 the Christian troops under St. Ferdinand III, king of Castile, captured the city of Seville from the Moors. Cannons were used in the Siege, which was the earliest recorded use of gunpowder in the West.

"Saint Vianney attributed all his miracles to Saint Philomena. He built his church in Ars France in her honor. The carving over the entrance shows Saint Philomena handing Saint Vianney his church. Inside the dome of that church is a fresco, telling the story of Saint Philomena. Hanging on one of the walls in that church is a painting Saint Vianney commissioned of Saint Philomena. He said that she appeared to him many times, so, the painting is a very close likeness of her. As close as the artist could get based on Saint Vianney's description."

Thank you Lumen. I LOVE the Curè. He is so loveable to me. I am grateful for his visions because they lend credibility to this ancient saint who I also love and have devotion to, though there is doubt out there as to her true existance,. But then, doubt has been drummed up about St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers, too. I dunno what to think sometimes!!!

"Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531. It was due to her appearance that the practice of human sacrifices ended.

The Aztecs had no written language, but they read the meaning in pictures and symbols just as we read newspapers. This image told the Aztecs volumes. The woman stands in front of the sun, and is therefore greater than their sun god Huitzlipochtli. She stands upon the moon, and is therefore greater than the moon god, Tezcatlipoca. She is held aloft by a winged person, which means she is a heavenly being, yet her hands are joined in prayer, which means there is one greater than she. The mantle's bluishgreen color is reserved to Aztec divinity, yet her eyes are lowered, which means she is not a goddess herself. The sash at her waist was worn by pregnant women in Aztec culture, thus the child she carries is divine. The white fur at the neck and sleeves and the gold border are marks of royalty for the Aztecs. The stars on her mantle and the angel "carrying" her represent a new era being carried in. Touching the edge of a cloak represents a kiss, thus the angel is "kissing" the lady. The broach at her throat has the same black cross carried by Cortés and the Spanish Friars.

Because she is pregnant, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of pregnant mothers and their unborn children. Her appearance, as mentioned, ended the Aztec practise of human sacrifice. Through prayer and the intercession of Our Lady, we can change our culture of death into a culture of life."

Boston has LOTS of beautiful churches. When I lived in Boston in the nineties, I visited many of them. I still alternated between the NO and TLM back then, so on weekdays I would beat the traffic by leaving the house early and go to one of the many beautiful churches inside 128 then attend daily Mass before arriving at work.

This church has been merged with another one, done in 2006.  :( But they have Mass in this church on Sundays. And according to their website, the parish has a Centering Prayer group...  ::)

This got me wondering.  The Visigoths were Arians but still used the Crucifix?  Or possibly the Crucifix was installed in this Visigoth church after the Visigoths became Trinitarian?

Found out from pastor that prior to 1946 there were no painting on wall up in the vaulted ceilings, in St Mary Star of the Sea. . Frescoes painted after 1946. Looking at page 1947, paintings on walls are there. In one year they added all the apostles and image of our Lady Star,of the Sea. ABSOLUTELY Beautiful.  I thought they were there when church built, in 20's. Not so. Now we have fabulous stained glass and wall images that will inspire for all days forward!!!!!!

Beautiful. Now that's what I mean about a face that is not the girl next door. I've seen much more beautiful renderings of our lady, but beautiful in this sense, I mean it is not a common looking face. I do love Mary faces that meet that standard and also portray her as other worldy beautiful. I am convinced our Lady was unspeakably beautiful on her exterior as well as her interior.

Yes. In West Berlin. On the corner, right across from an Ubahn and overpass to the north of them. Gorgeous wooden doors. I miss Berlin. October, 2016:  My Muslim/Turk cabbie turned to me upon arrival, switched to English, and said:" You never see this in Germany. . . your brothers will help you [get a ride back to East Berlin]." He was right and had a sense of respect in his voice. I went to the 18.00 Mass.

Shower of rose petals on the feast of Pentecost, Pantheon, Rome - The ancient tradition of showering down rose petals into the interior of the Pantheon through the oculus or opening in the massive second century dome dates back to 609 AD when the Pantheon was consecrated as a Christian church. On that occasion the Emperor Phocas granted the Pantheon to Pope Boniface IV, asking it to be consecrated to the Virgin Mary and the martyrs. During the consecration ceremony, Boniface had thousands of rose petals dropped through the oculus as a sign of the descent of the Holy Spirit into the space.

In the years following its consecration, the tradition of showering rose petals was repeated on the feast of Pentecost, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles fifty days after Easter. The tradition continued for centuries and was interrupted for a time but was resumed as an annual tradition in 1995.

The Pantheon was built in the second century AD by the Emperor Hadrian and it is one of the best preserved buildings from the ancient world. It was saved from abandonment and destruction during the medieval period, a fate that most of the other ancient buildings in the city of Rome suffered, because of its continued use as a church.

An almuce was a hood-like shoulder cape worn as a choir vestment in the Middle Ages, especially in England. Initially, it was worn by the general population. It found lasting use by certain canons regular, such as the white almutium worn on the arm by Premonstratensian canons. Use of fur-lined almuce was against the rules of the canons, leading to requests for dispensations from the rule, as described by Alison Fizzard. It also survives in the tippet and hood worn by some Anglican priests.

The famous multiple colour chasuble.

Very often this had to do with poorer churches and chapels "making do." To the best of their means they tried to follow the cycle of liturgical colours. Quite admirable when you think about it. Nowadays you have rich parishes that can't be bothered with acquiring a rose vestment.

Southern dome Christ Pantokrator mosaic, fourteenth century, Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora (Kariye Müzesi, Kariye Camii), Istanbul – This beautiful dome mosaic on the southern dome on the inner narthex shows the genealogy of Jesus Christ, was completed 1315-1321 AD in glass and gold tesserae.

The dome mosaic is centered on the image of Christ Pantokrator, ruler of all. Radiating out from Christ along the dome's ribs are mosaics of the ancestors of Christ as indicated in the Biblical narrative.

The Chora Church (???????? ??? ????? ??????? ?? ?? ????) was originally built in the fourth century in the countryside outside of Constantinople's original city walls. The current structure, which was later located just within the Theodosian walls, was rebuilt in the 11th century and the impressive internal decorations were made during the early 14th century under the patronage of Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites. The church was converted into a mosque circa 1500 by At?k Ali Pa?a, the Grand Vizier of Sultan Bayezid II and the Christian iconography was covered by plaster. In 1948, the building was converted into a museum, opening to the public in 1958. The artwork was restored by the Byzantine Institute of America and the Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies. The Chora Church contains the most extensive and complete Byzantine period artwork of any Byzantine period church in modern Istanbul.

I know that this is kind of cheating because it doesn't come from a specifically Christian "civilization" nor is it a still picture

But, YouTube recommended this, and I'm reminded that I still need to watch this film in its entirety.

This is from a 1938 Soviet Film called "Alexander Nevsky," which involves the famous "Battle on the Ice."

The Battle on the Ice was a major battle where the Livonian Order / Teutonic Order, during a phase called the "Northern Crusades," invaded Novgorod / Russia for expansion, and in an unlikely twist, the Novgorodian Republic repelled them successfully and effectively, ending the Northern Crusades. According to tradition, the heavy army of the Crusaders caused the ice underneath them to collapse, although most historians believe this never happened.

This film was made by world-renowned Soviet Cinematographer Sergei Eisenstein, probably in anticipation of a possible war with the Germans (as the Livonians, who weren't German, are referred to as "Germans" in the film). But it's still a great film, with a soundtrack composed by Sergei Prokofiev, and it captures something that modern films can't with its practical effects.

This part of the film captures the offensive march forward by the Crusaders and the beginning of the Battle.

I might have shown this before, but

This is an illuminated manuscript from the De Lisle Psalter from around the 13th century. This is a picture known as the "Ages of Man" that is about the cycle of life a man goes through, with Christ in the Middle.

From the bottom left, the man is born and nursed. He is then a youth who loves his own looks, combing his hair and looking at the mirror. He is then studying and being educated, as is evident from the scales. He then goes through an age of chivalry, riding on his horse with a dove, looking for the love of a woman. He is then at the "height" of his life, portrayed as a king. However, as he gets older, he puts on monastic garb to represent his abandoning of his previous, youthful lifestyle - literally waving goodbye to it. He has a child of his own which he raises. For the next few phases, he gets sick, dies (his funeral), and ends in the casket.

Doesn't look like his child. He is a grey-haired senior imparting his wisdom to a student. This circle parallels the one on the other side, but this time he is the teacher.

Another interpretation I found on-line seems more plausible than mine -- The boy is leading the old man in his decrepitude. In the previous circle the man has a staff, but now he needs assistance to walk with the staff, maybe blind or lame.

Cathedral of Monreale, Palermo, Italy.

Quote from: WikipediaOne of the greatest existent examples of Norman architecture, it was begun in 1174 by William II of Sicily. In 1182 the church, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was, by a bull of Pope Lucius III, elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral. Since 2015 it is part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO Heritage site. The church is a national monument of Italy and one of the most important attractions of Sicily. Its size is 102 meters long and 40 meters wide.

That's usually where I hear Mass. George Ashlin (https://www.dia.ie/architects/view/72/ASHLIN-GEORGECOPPINGER) (wiki article listing his work (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Ashlin)), an understudy and brother in law of AW Pugin, was the architect. The roof of the rectory is now under repair (the church had been repaired some years before and the rectory has had no major repair since original construction in c. 1870), and there are plans to restore more of the original stenciled paint that now can only be seen in the sanctuary. It can be seen that painting everything magnolia was probably the second document of V2! Although restored in part, the V2 interventions weren't too radical, no bishop Eamon Casey ordered smashing of marble work, just the altar moved forward, now moved back again.

St. Kevin's Church, Dublin. Besides being a normal diocesan church, it is also the home of the Latin Mass Chaplaincy in Dublin.

I was able to attend the TLM there last Sunday. Very nice church in a gothic-revivalist style. Here are a few pictures I took:

Now this lady knows how to dress for Mass!
I know what she's wearing. This specific cape is worn by the members of a polish "breakaway" group formed by Fr. Natanek who now says the TLM exclusively. He has refused to obey his bishop and was later excommunicated. He follows this weird lady who has visions from heaven and he also takes directives from her occasionally. I used to listen to him when I was still in my Novus Ordo days but over the years this priest really lost his bearings.

Pope Alexander VI, from the George S. Stuart Collection.

Sadly, the stole is wrong. It should not be crossed.

An altar front from sixth-seventh century Byzantium. You can see it yourself at the Cleveland Museum of Art. I don't live in Cleveland now, but it's worth a stop for their medieval Christian art collection.

Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Asmara, the principal church of the former Apostolic Vicariate of Eritrea, suppressed in 1995.

Now it belongs to the Eritrean Catholic Archeparchy of Asmara.

A real "high" Mass. Reaching new "heights" in liturgy.

Fr. Antony Sumich & Fr. Bartholomew, FSSP priests, both celebrated Mass on the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a photo of Fr Bartholomew.

This is an illuminated manuscript from the De Lisle Psalter from around the 13th century. This is a picture known as the "Ages of Man" that is about the cycle of life a man goes through, with Christ in the Middle.

Beautiful, thanks for posting this.

He then goes through an age of chivalry, riding on his horse with a dove, looking for the love of a woman.

Looks like a falcon rather than a dove. He is out hunting.

He has a child of his own which he raises.

Doesn't look like his child. He is a grey-haired senior imparting his wisdom to a student. This circle parallels the one on the other side, but this time he is the teacher.

Maybe he was out hunting for a woman  ;)

I have no idea, other than it being shared to me.

Someone managed to harness the full power of God and Anime. I kind of want to become Fanta right now.

I'm not sure the PP would tolerate Rocky Balboa. It might be liturgical in based Poland, but maybe not Ireland.
