Title: Looking for St. Andrew or New Roman Missal(Lasance)
Post by: martin88nyc on December 15, 2018, 03:30:13 PM
Does anybody have any extra missals for sale? I am specifically looking for reprints of The New Roman Missal by Lasance and St. Andrew Missal.

I'm not sure if you are strictly looking for used copies, but the FSSP's bookstore sells new reprints of both, though the New Roman Missal appears to be backordered at the moment.

Used are preferable as long as they don't fall apart ;)
Can you or somebody tell me please which missal is better and easier to follow. I know both are chock full of information about saint and liturgical seasons.

My St Andrew's Missal is one of the time (1940 Imprimatur with updates until 1947) with a calendar for Irish in the supplement, so might not be wholly identical, but I would prefer the St Andrew Missal (SAM). While the Fr Lasance Missal (FLM) has an excellent TLM tutorial text while SAM keeps the explanation shorter, focusing more on history, but FLM has elements I like less, like only a general explanation for each part of the Church year, while the SAM has substantial accounts for each Sunday covering the two sides of the liturgy, the Mass and Divine Office. Likewise the Saint's Lives are in a section in FLM, but the SAM places each alongside the propers for that Saint, if any, or whichever page in the Common of the Saints. The SAM, mine at least, is somewhat lighter. The SAM has the usual prayers like Pater Noster in both Latin and English. Both are excellent, but the SAM is better for me, and perhaps better for someone who probably has a decent knowledge of the Mass.

Look on Ebay and other places offering old books. Sometimes good value and condition can be got, and also a big array of excellent Missals not printed like one published by the Maryknoll Fathers, or the Roman Missal which was published in various versions in Ireland and Britain from the nineteenth century to the sixties. Another benefit is that an Ebay missal can come with a slipcase. Condition can be an issue and an apparently clean book but old book can be far more fragile than it looks. Another genre that's vanished are smaller missals which fitted in a man's coat pocket or ladies' purse.

I am not sure if you're still interested but, for the benefit of others who may be, I include a link to two St Andrew Missals.

I've never liked the St. Andrew's Missal, but I had only ever seen the pre-1955 version. This newer version doesn't make me feel uneasy the way the older version does. This fills me with genuine horror. The one good thing from this missal is that it makes it clear that the New Mass was a logical next step after the 1962 "reforms."
