In the Russian film, ¨Andrei Rublev¨ the Mongols attacked the Cathedral...the people were the buffer and when they reached the Monk who hid the Churchs Relics/treasures they tortured him to death to reveal the whereabouts.  Imagine that similar scenario but in Ethopia...the Faithful were the buffer, it would have taken time to shoot their way through those numbers. The Faithful, this Ark (replica, imo) is the heart and soul, they prob. stood shoulder to shoulder or locked arms. In other words they bought the Monks time in the Sanctuary. They allowed the Monks time to hide or to take the Ark to safety.  In short, they sacrificed themselves to save the Ark.  Hopefully there 1000 plus souls sacrificed was not in vain.
