I can't figure out how to rip my subtitled DVDs

I can rip them using VLS, but the subtitles don't transfer. Anybody know what value I have to put in the subtitle box for the subtitles to actually transfer over? The default is -1. I tried 0, and all it did was copy the DVD's title menu over and over for as long as I had the program open.
