Neat video on the voyageurs, told from the first hand accounts of a trader (?) who accompanied them on a journey.  Worth it just for the canoe and water footage.

There's a Voyageur Provincial Park on the Ottawa River close to the Macdonell-Williamson House at Pointe Fortune.  The Macdonell-Williamson House was built by John Macdonell who was a wintering partner for the North West Company in the Qu'Appelle valley, which is now in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.  The North West Company was a fur trading company that was in competition with the Hudson Bay Company at the time.  Miles Macdonell, John's older brother was the first governor of the Red River Colony (the Selkirk Settlement).

In the United States there is also the Voyageurs National Park on Rainy River close to International Falls, north of Duluth, Minnesota.  "The park's name commemorates the voyageurs—French-Canadian fur traders ..."

Non Nobis

[Matthew 8:26]  And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.

[Job  38:1-5]  Then the Lord answered Job out of a whirlwind, and said: [2] Who is this that wrappeth up sentences in unskillful words? [3] Gird up thy loins like a man: I will ask thee, and answer thou me. [4] Where wast thou when I laid up the foundations of the earth? tell me if thou hast understanding. [5] Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

Jesus, Mary, I love Thee! Save souls!

Now that wouldn't be too far of a drive for me, thanks!

There's lots of videos if you do a youtube search for 'Voyageurs'.  I noticed a few on the Voyageurs National Park too.  It looks like a nice place to visit.

One video that I watched said the longest portage the voyageurs had was 8 miles long, from Grand Portage (now in Minnesota) on Lake Superior to Fort Charlotte on the Pigeon River.  The portage was to get around the rapids and waterfalls on the Pigeon River.  Imagine, an 8 mile long portage carrying at least 90 pounds.  Maybe a little further but that may be within your driving range too.

My paternal line is voyageur. I've seen it in their occupation descriptions on Canadian censuses
and traced us back to 1630's in Canada. A cousin of mine was the first European to ever see the Rocky Mountains.

This is another good video that you might like drummerboy.  Apparently even beyond Grand Portage to Isle Royale in the east and all the waterway west to the Voyageurs National Park is somewhat of a national treasure.  They call it the Boundary Waters.
